This evening I attended the local writer's group, held at the Spindrift Studio in Banff, and is something I've wanted to attend for months, but never got round to it till now. The moment I walked in the door I was immediately taken back, back to when I was at school, for I met there an old friend from those days. He had escaped the clutches of these two small townships in search of the big city and only just returned last year. We were able to catch up over a coffee and cake, oh and read a little writing too.
We talked in general about our writing and I heard some short stories with the theme of writing from the eye of innate objects. My friend chose to be a bed, and though there was no spice, it was an interesting listen. And thankfully not too much of well, you know, that sort of thing. Another was a mirror, and another a TV set. Which got me thinking of 1984 by George Orwell, for this is the book I am reading. If you have read it you'll know what I mean with regarding the telescreens, if not I suggest you get yourself a copy, it's a great book. Of course, I had a chance to read also, and read a short story of mine about a dragon being awakoken from a long incarceration in stone. This was kind of sticking with the, 'write about an innate object' theme, if you consider rock as the innate object. Anyway they liked what I wrote and gave encouraging feedback. It was mentioned that some writers get together in couples and go somewhere, say an office, on their own, with no interruptions and do nothing but write, so starting tomorrow, the small group will be getting together for just this occasion. If the weather is bad, ie, raining and I cannot possibly work outside on the developing plot, I'll be in attendance, for I will have access to free coffee as many as one writer may consume. Looking forward to it.
